DJI has learned a lot in the last three year about maximising the impact of a drone product launch.
The latest has taken on the look and feel of the masters of the consumer electronic product launch – Apple.
It may be no coincident DJI has forged a close business relationship with Apple where DJI Spark, Mavic and Phantom drones are stocked and sold in Apple stores around the world.
When you look closely at the product packaging design of the two companies, it also show remarkable similarities.
DJI have just released this trailer for a product launch later this month, due to be held on January 23rd in New York.
The company has sent invites out for the event takes place in New York City on January 23 at 10 a.m. ET, with many expecting DJI to unveil its first drone since the launch of the Spark.
The location could be significant. The company has used Los Angeles as the backdrop for its film-related announcements, but New York has been the preferred location for both the Mavic Pro and Spark consumer drone announcements.
DJI did launch the Tello nano drone and two new handheld camera gimbals for the Osmo Mobile 2 and the Rohin S in Las Vegas last week at CES 2018, the largest consumer electronics exhibition in the world,
But DJI avoided CES 2018 for this major product launch in order to take full advantage of the spotlight.
From the teaser video released on the 16 January, here are our interpretation of any marketing or product clues. “Adventure Unflolds” is the tagline for the video.
‘Unfolds’ could be a reference to a folding drone of some sort. The only thing fitting that description in DJI’s product line currently is the Mavic Pro. So perhaps we could be looking at another iteration of the Mavic – this time more sophisticated than the silver ‘Platinum’ that launched
‘Adventure’ could suggest a weather-proof consumer drone which is a major step forward for DJI. And all the hints at the elements in the video suggest that is what’s coming.
Some commentators and tech press think the company could be launching a fixed wing aircraft, like Parrot, we think this very unlikely as they need a lot of space and it does not seem to fit in the current DJI product range.
Our best guess is a new foldable drone larger that the Mavic, which could be called the Phantom 5. We will have to wait until Tuesday 23 January to find out.
